Free tools

  • KVM (for Kernel-based Virtual Machine): is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions (Intel VT or AMD-V). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko. KVM also requires a modified QEMU although work is underway to get the required changes upstream.
  • libGuestfs: A set of tools for accessing and modifying virtual machine (VM) disk images.
  • libVirt: A toolkit to interact with the virtualization capabilities of recent versions of Linux (and other OSes respective to project goals), and other usefull increments.
  • OMF/OML: OMF is a framework for controlling, instrumenting, and managing experimental platforms (testbeds).
  • Open vSwitch: Open vSwitch is a production quality, multilayer virtual switch licensed under the open source Apache 2.0 license. It is designed to enable massive network automation through programmatic extension, while still supporting standard management interfaces and protocols (e.g. NetFlow, sFlow, SPAN, RSPAN, CLI, LACP, 802.1ag). In addition, it is designed to support distribution across multiple physical servers similar to VMware's vNetwork distributed vswitch or Cisco's Nexus 1000V.
  • OpenStack: OpenStack is a combination of several open-source-projects. They afford enterprises and service providers to build their own "Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)"-cloud. The project was initiated by Rackspace and NASA. Meanwhile, the project is supported by many leading companies. To name a german company, Deutsche Telekom. OpenStack consists of four core components: Compute(Nova), Object Storage (Swift), Image Service (Glance) and Identity Service (Keystone). There also exists a webinterface (Dashboard) and a component for extended network functionalities (Quantum).
  • QEMU: A generic and open source machine emulator and virtualizer.
  • sVirt: A community project which integrates Mandatory Access Control (MAC) security and Linux-based virtualization.
  • VDE / VDE-Wiki: VDE is an ethernet compliant virtual network that can be spawned over a set of physical computer over the Internet. You can use it to connect virtual machines or linux boxes or any combination of the two. Like a real modern Ethernet network a VDE is composed by switches and cables. Each switch has several sockets where machines can be "plugged-in".
  • Virt Tools: An open source virtualization management tools for Linux system administrators.
  • Vyatta: The free community Vyatta Core software(VC) is an award-winning open source network operating system providing advanced IPv4 and IPv6 routing, stateful firewalling, IPSec and SSL OpenVPN, intrusion prevention, and more. When you add Vyatta to a standard x86 hardware system, you can create an enterprise grade network appliance that easily scales from DSL to 10Gbps. Vyatta is also optimized to run in VMware, Citrix XenServer, Xen, KVM, and other hypervisors, providing networking and security services to virtual machines and cloud computing environments.
